TOURS / NATURE

The male and the female were suspended in the sky for five or ten minutes… I was transfixed by their wings… I wanted to turn into a bird!

Encounter protected species in their natural habitats

In our mission to raise awareness of Cordoba’s environmental heritage and to support biodiversity from a standpoint of environmentally-friendliness, we offer you activities in the heart of the countryside where the starring role is taken by Iberian wildlife. Our specialist guides will be merely the staging post enabling us to approach spectacular examples of protected species that have made their home in Cordoba’s green spaces since time immemorial. Sierra Morena, Sierra de Hornachuelos, Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro, Sierra de Andújar, Los Pedroches, the Guadiato Valley, the Guadalquivir Valley and the wetlands of the rolling hills will be the natural settings we focus on most closely.

We invite you to be silent witnesses and enjoy nature without disturbing the lives of its inhabitants. Carefully concealed in permanent hides, we’ll be able to photograph such bird species as the black vulture, the imperial eagle, the great spotted woodpecker, the Egyptian vulture and the kingfisher. Whether on foot or travelling by canoe we’ll be able to savour the wilder side of nature, the rut, the period when the deer start to mate and indulge in their particular “mating call” in autumn after the first rains… the sound that comes from the throats of the males is genuinely startling!

A special mention should go to the lynx, the most endangered feline species on the planet, but which has found a favourable habitat for breeding in the province of Cordoba. Expert biologists will guide us on this tour where, in small groups, we’ll learn about the behaviour of the lynx and how to spot the signs of its presence using footprint charts, telescopes, binoculars, antennas and photo-traps. And if we are extremely lucky we might even see one of the animals in the flesh!
